Butterfly Conservatory

Located in a serene town of El Castillo on the eastern border of Lake Arenal, Butterfly Conservatory is a nature regeneration project in Costa Rica. The greenhouse displays Costa Rica’s largest butterfly exhibition. The conservatory has six vast atriums which serve as a natural home to butterflies, a massive insect museum, a ranarium that acts as a natural habitat for frogs, a plant regeneration nursery, a medical herb garden and several trails that run along the river through a botanical garden. At Butterfly Conservatory, you can experience amazing new things about nature, butterflies, frogs, insects, plants and their fascinating life cycles. The tours are not only fun and adventurous but educational as well. Furthermore, there are scientific and educational programs for students and volunteers who work and learn under the supervision of biologists from the University of Costa Rica. Butterfly Conservatory 2Butterfly Conservatory was founded in 2003 by Glenn Baines who is a retired engineer from America. The conservatory was built as a part of Rainforest Regeneration Project. Glenn took a vacation to Costa Rica and was impressed by the natural beauty of the country. During his trip to Arenal, he had a chance to see the spectacular lava eruption from Arenal Volcano. The beauty and tranquility of Arenal motivated him to stay in Costa Rica and built a butterfly sanctuary. In 2003, his dream came true and Butterfly Conservatory was founded. It houses the largest butterfly exhibition and is considered one of the best nature regeneration programs of Costa Rica. If you are a nature lover, a visit to Butterfly Conservatory is a must.

The staff of the greenhouse organizes exciting, educational tours in which you get to have a rare glimpse of natural jewels of Costa Rica. It boasts over 30 species of butterflies, frogs that live within four different micro-climates by Lake Arenal, numerous insects, various tropical plants, herbs and trees. The tours also involve educational trips to laboratories, reproduction greenhouses, frog habits, host plant gardens and orchid exhibition. For further adventures, head out to Rainforest River Walk along Quebrada Mariposa, a beautiful creek that runs through the jungle. You will be delighted to find many animals and birds lsuch as sloths, tayra, monkeys, or toucans and parrots.
